A teacher is a person who knows all the answers, but only when she asks the right questions.~Unknown

homeschool teacher 300x199 Evalutate Your Home School Year: The Good and the Bad

It is the end of the school year.  For us home school mommas, we are ready!  The kids are counting the days and so are we.  Sometimes it is hard to finish well even when we know how important it is to do so.  Over the last few years, before I allow myself to sit down and plan,  I evaluate our home school year.  Asking questions not only of me but each of my children.  Questions to ponder, questions to really be honest about.

The beauty of homeschooling is flexibility–we don’t have to do it the same year in year out with each child.  Homeschooling gives us the advantage of looking at each student as an individual and finding what works for them.  But as they grow and change, and we grown and change, sometimes things need to change.  However, if we don’t honestly answer the hard questions, we won’t know all the answers!  We won’t know how to change.  We won’t know how to help our children become all they can be and in turn they won’t be able to help us become all we can be.

As the home school year is coming to a close, I thought I would share with you my evaluation form.  It is simple.  Not many questions.  In the past I have just asked the kids the questions over a cup of hot chocolate in the mornings.  But this year, we are making it something special…a Teacher-Student date!  I want their feedback.  Evaluation is healthy, needed.  It is personal reflection that helps you and your child.  You may already do something like this.  But if you don’t, I encourage you to start.  Grab this evaluation, ask the questions.  You might even have some other questions to add or not use all of them.  Either way, evaluate the progress and work you and your students made and I can guarantee you will have an even better school year next year!

Would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.  Do you evaluate your home school year?  Or is this a new concept?  What questions do you ask yourself?

Awaiting the Last Day,

Heather

Rest: What We All Yearn For

by Heather on May 14, 2012

Do you ever find yourself yearning to rest?  Do you ever think, “If I could just rest for the day, do nothing, relax?”  I have been there, sometimes on a weekly basis.  Honestly, sometimes at the end of everyday I feel that way.  Life often feels like a rat race, running from one activity to another only to come home to piles of laundry, a dirty house, and dinner to make.  We are tired, we just want to rest.

I began seeking the Lord about this idea of REST.  I mean, what does that really mean?  To rest?  Sure, rest means to stop, relax, rejuvenate.  But I couldn’t shake the feeling it had a deeper meaning, one that went to depths of who I was created to be.  One day as I was sitting with the Lord, flipping through the Psalms in no particular order, I came across Psalm 23.  I skimmed it.  I knew this Psalm, after all it is recited at most funerals, it has been in my memory verse repertoire for years.  But I felt like I was just supposed to meditate on it.  I began asking the Lord, what do YOU want me to see here.  I didn’t want to see all the stuff I knew about this Psalm, I wanted something fresh, something new…

Psalm 23:1-3

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

HE makes me to lie down in green pastures;

Green Pastures Rest: What We All Yearn For

HE leads me beside the still waters.

Still waters 300x191 Rest: What We All Yearn For

HE restores my soul;

HE leads me in the paths of righteous for HIS name sake.

path 300x274 Rest: What We All Yearn For

The fresh revelation was so simple and so profound.  HE is the one who gives the rest!  Did you catch that?  HE makes me lie down, HE leads me beside still waters, HE restores my soul, HE leads me in paths of righteousness.   HE, God, my Abba Father, HE does the leading, HE gives the rest.  We get so caught up in getting rest, physical rest, that we miss HE gives us rest in the midst of the craziness of life.  Living a life of rest doesn’t mean we get to nap everyday or don’t have lots on our to-do list.  It means we live in a posture of rest.  When we know who we are, when we let Him give the rest, we just simply live in rest.  Don’t you want that?  I know I do!

So how do we live in that place?  Getting in His presence everyday.  Seeing this temporal, fleeting world from the lap of the Father, from heaven’s perspective.  His presence moment by moment gives us the rest we are yearning for.

But why?  Why does He give us this rest?  He loves us and when we are able to rest in the craziness of life, HIS name goes forth.  You become a beacon of light, everyone will want what you have!  It is for HIS NAME that He gives us rest.

It is that simple and that profound.  I love that God uses simple things to bring us into a deeper place with Him.

Resting in His presence,

Heather
